My wife Hilary came across this very powerful video in Oprah Magazine of Billy Bob Thornton talking about the enormous impact the death of his younger brother, Jimmy Don, has had on his life.  This is short-only about 2 minutes.

I’ve Never Been The Same

Mr. Thornton’s sage words of advice, particularly these, ring very true with me.

You won’t ever get over it, and the more you know that, and embrace it, the better off you are.  I don’t want to forget my brother; I don’t want to forget what I felt like when he died.  Because he deserves it!

Jimmy Gauntt

was born and raised in Solana Beach and graduated from Torrey Pines High School in 2002.   A prestigious Trustee Scholar at the University of Southern California, he majored in English and Spanish. He authored six plays, five screenplays, and a multitude of poems and short stories. Beginning in 2010, the USC English Department annually bestows the Jimmy Gauntt Memorial Award—aka “The Jimmy”—to the top graduates in English.  Jimmy passed over to the other side in 2008 at age 24.
